The India Meteorological Department on Monday issued a red alert for Mumbai and its suburbs for the next two days, warning of heavy rainfall. The city has been receiving heavy rains over the past three days as well.

Residents were on Monday advised to avoid stepping out unless necessary.

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation also announced that all schools and colleges in the city would be closed after noon on Monday.

Chembur recorded the heaviest rainfall in the city at 177.2 mm. Dadar registered the second-highest at 173.4 mm, while Worli stood third at 170.2 mm.

Waterlogging was reported in several areas, slowing traffic on the Western Express Highway near Vile Parle and flooding Gandhi Market in Sion. Other low-lying areas, such as Andheri Subway and Lokhandwala Complex, also saw water accumulation, disrupting traffic movement.

Suburban train services were delayed by 15 to 20 minutes.

Mumbai airport authorities issued an advisory, asking passengers to arrive early and check flight schedules with their respective airlines in view of the prevailing situation.
